A tricky opener. Dead straight, trees lining both sides ready to block out an errant tee shot. Finding the green is tricky due to being well-bunkered. Avoid going log, since the green slopes away, leaving a very difficult up and down to anyone going long here. Anyone starting with a par should be happy walking to the next tee.

A demanding tee shot through a narrow avenue of trees on this long par 4. The trouble does not end after the tee shot. The second shot is equally as demanding, usually a long or mid iron to a small green, with out-of bounds just left and beyond the green. This hole is stroke index 4 for good reason.

A pretty hole, but do not let that lull you in to a false sense of security. A tee shot through an avenue of trees to a green that is generous in size, but falls away on every side. Miss the green, and a tricky uphill pitch awaits.

A slight dogleg, left to right. Avoid the row of pines on the right by favouring the left side of the fairway. The long hitters have an advantage here, as the fairway opens up the further you hit the tee shot. The green is generous for the second shot, but choose your club carefully. With the backdrop of trees, it can be deceiving!

Water Hole. Not a long hole, but not easy either. As the name suggests (Pwll, meaning pool in english), this hole incorporates a water feature. A narrow tee shot, trees on both sides, meaning it is more important to be straight than long here. However, the braver you are with the club selection from the tee, means a shorter iron to the green. That is no bad thing on this hole, with a large pond guarding the front of the green and a big bunker beyond.

This hole is all about the green. A straight drive is once again essential here, if the green is to be reached in two shots. What makes this hole tricky is the well-bunkered green, which slopes unusually from front to back. Make sure you get on the correct level, otherwise two-putting can be a challenge. The savvy golfer will make a note of the pin position on this green, whilst passing on the 2nd.

A very demanding hole. This hole takes us back to the Clubhouse. Stroke index 2 for good reason. At 441 yards, it is a long hole requiring two very good shots to reach in regulation. The right side of the fairway is favourable, keeping clear of the ditch running the length of the hole to the left. Those hoping to run their second shots in will need to thread their shot between the two cross bunkers short of the green. You should always be pleased with a four here.

The start of the links. The tee shot at the 8th signals the start of the links holes. Not long at just 350 yards, but with a fairway surrounded by gorse and a green guarded by bunkers, it is not for the faint-hearted. The sensible way to play the hole is an iron or lofted wood to the widest part of the fairway, favouring the right, then taking your chances from there with the second shot.

A strong Par 4. Usually plays into the prevailing wind. A tee shot up the left provides the shortest route to the green, but requires an accurate tee shot. Having reached the fairway, the second shot is difficult, with a green surrounded by bunkers.

One of the signature holes at Pwllheli. A long par 3, especially from the recently re-introduced back tee providing an elevated tee shot and another beautiful view of Cardigan Bay. The green is long from front to back, but two large bunkers defend against a mishit tee shot finding the putting surface. Right is the safe miss, but again, bunkers await.

On paper this hole should provide respite at just over 290 yards from the back tees. The yardage does not tell all of the story, however. An elevated tee provides a good look at what is ahead. Gorse to the left and trees to the right. A fairway bunker protects the right side of the fairway. The brave long-hitter might fancy going for the green. Once the fairway is found, a tricky approach awaits, with the bowl-shaped green surrounded by bunkers.

A pretty short hole. Again, a newly introduced back tee provides a daunting task for the golfer. A little easier from the forward tees, but only a straight shot will do, with a river to the left and behind the green, and a bunker guarding the right side. Good club selection is vital to set up a birdie putt.

This hole starts the journey back towards the Clubhouse. A demanding drive, especially from the White tees. As with many of the holes on the back nine, the green is surrounded by bunkers, ready to catch a stray approach. The green slopes from right to left, so keep your approach under the hole for the easiest putt.

A great little risk / reward hole. A left to right dogleg, with out of bounds to the right. Club selection from the tee will depend on how brave you are feeling. The safe play is to the left side of the fairway, avoiding the OB and bunkers, leaving a mid to short iron to the green. The long hitters can reach the green with favourable wind conditions, though much trouble awaits, with trees, a river, a pond and bunker all in close proximity to the green.

Stroke index 1, and for very good reason. The toughest hole on the course. An intimidating drive, with gorse to the right and trees to the left. The shorter hitters may have to play this hole as a three-shotter, laying up short of the fairway bunker in two, before a short iron to the green. The further the drive, the better view the player gets of the green. Anyone making a Par here should be very pleased.

Not the longest hole but tricky none the less. Aim for the marker post on the crest of the hill. With gorse to the right of the fairway and thick rough to the left, many opt to play safe with an iron or lofted wood from the tee. Play too safe, and it will leave a longer shot to this well-guarded green, with bunkers left and right and Out of Bounds if you are too long.

Dogleg Par 4. The drive needs to be accurate, again with trouble left and right. Just left of the marker post is ideal, since the further left the drive, the better the view of the green. Some will bail out to the right from the tee, leaving a very difficult second, needing much height to get over the trees down the right side of the hole.

A dead straight Par 4. Trees line the left side with Out of bounds all the way up the right hand side of the hole. The green is quite narrow but very long. Make a note of the pin position while playing the 8th. Knowing where the flag is could avoid having a very long, difficult two-putt.
